Top Athletes In Professional Poker

It’s becoming more and more common to see top athletes at the professional poker table. Poker is a common activity among professional athletes, who often have a lot of idle hours and disposable income between games. After they retire, many players retain their competitive urges and instincts, even when their bodies do not allow them to continue to play their sport at the highest level. When this happens, poker is often a great outlet.

Orel Hershiser: Baseball Pitcher

Few fans of baseball and no fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers are unaware of Orel Hershiser. Nicknamed “The Bulldog” by coach Tommy Lasorda because of his ferocity, Hershiser led the Dodgers to a World Series Championship while on his way to pitching a record 59 scoreless innings (breaking the record set by another Dodger, Don Drysdale). After the Dodgers, Hershiser moved to the Cleveland Indians, where he helped them reach the World Series in 1995. After spending time with the Giants and Mets, he retired as a Dodger after the 2000 season.

Orel Hershiser: Poker Player

Although Hershiser found rewarding jobs in baseball after his retirement, they did nothing to quell his competitive urges. In 2006, he moved to Las Vegas and started playing regularly. Hershiser first made his real splash in the poker world at the 2008 National Heads Up Poker Championship when he made the quarterfinals, beating some of the best players in the world to do so. While sometimes celebrities get lucky at events like this, Hershiser’s consistently good play made it clear that he knew what he was doing. Since then, he has been signed as a sponsored player by PokerStars, has made the final table of the World Championship of online poker, and has appeared on NBC’s Poker After Dark and at the World Series of Poker.

Orel Hershiser Poker Notes

Like many poker players, Hershiser has a signature move, which involves a PokerStars branded baseball that he brings with him to poker tournaments

. When he defeats a player in an invitational tournament, he asks them to sign the ball for him, and when he is knocked out, he signs a ball for the winner. In between, the ball serves as a card protector.

Injured Mathews is Doubtful to Continue as Bowler in Future

Sri Lanka’s all-rounder Angelo Mathews who is currently prone to calf injury seems to be having doubtful future as bowler at international level. He is also being rested for the upcoming England test.

Details provided by Ashantha de Mel, Sri Lanka’s chief selector mentions that, Mathew faces a potential future as a specialist batsman will come as a shock for the side that has only couple of days left to regroup ahead of the Galle Test after rushing back home from Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Mathews also failed the fitness test that was held in Friday Morning. This injury also kept him out from the Asia Cup and the finals of Commonwealth Bank Tri-series. To replace Mathews, middle-order batsman Chamara Silva is being included in the squad. Silva made a significant century against England for the Sri Lanka Development XI against England this week.

De Mel said, “I don’t think we can use Mathews as an all-rounder in the future. Mathews has some problems with his legs and it is very unlikely he will bowl much.  We have to look at him purely as a batsman.”

De Mel also stated that Tharanga Paranavitana and Lahiru Thirimanne will be contesting to be a right partner with Tillakaratne Dilshan at the top order batsman. Also there will be a contest among Suranga Lakmal and Dhammika Prasad for the addition in fast bowling and partnering Chanaka Welegedera.

On fixing up the No 7 batsman position, De Mel said, “The team management will have to take a call on who should bat at no.7. It is between wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayewardene and Dinesh Chandimal, who has not kept wickets from some time.”

Bodi and Maxwell Picked for Delhi Daredevils Team

Victoria All-rounder Glenn Maxwell and South Africa batsman Gulam Bodi are being picked up by Delhi Daredevils for upcoming IPL season starting next month replacing Colin Ingram and Travis Birt.

Glenn Maxwell, 23, has played 14 A list games with the average of 25.44 and has picked nine wickets at 37.55 in the format. He also holds the record for the fastest half-century, off 17 balls in List A cricket match in Australia. He has also fared better in T20 format games.
Daredevils team mentor, TA Sekar said in the press release, “When Ashish Kapoor, (Daredevils Team Manager) and I watched Glenn in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia in July last, we saw him as a player with immense potential who loves being in the contest. When we watched him bat, we were reminded of how we had spotted David Warner in 2008. We believe Glenn will play for Australia soon.”

Sekar also said, “Besides being a dashing batsman, Glenn is a solid off spinner and an amazing fielder, with infectious enthusiasm. A multi skilled player like him will add more immense value to this side.”

Bodi, 33, a South African player made his debut in the year 1996-97 and has played two ODIs and a T20 for the country. Since his debut, Bodi played 131 List A matches with the average of 32.40. He also has 64 T20s under his cap with the average of 29.29 with the highest of 98 not out. According to Sekar, Bodi will remain as middle-order batsman.
Sekar said in the release, “Gulam was the best available replacement given that we had to find someone with Birt’s base price. Just other day he made a brilliant 90 runs off 51 balls with seven fours and five sixes for Lions against Warriors in T20 challenge in South Africa.”

India will play England in the first ODI

India will play England in the first of the five ODIs on October 14, to be played at Hyderabad. The two teams are coming off another series in England, in which the Indians were totally swamped by the opponents and will look to take revenge.

India lost all their four Test matches, three ODIs and the one-off T20I to England and will look to come hard at their opponents. However, it will be interesting to see whether they can dole out the same dose at the English side at home – especially given that at the start of the season, the pitches will be much in favour of the Indian slow bowlers.

What could affect the Indian bowling is that they will need to use two new balls and that will not only reduce the chances of a slow bowler but also that of early reverse swing.

On the other hand, England will hope to get going with experienced Kevin Pietersen set to prove the selectors’ decision to drop him from the ODIs wrong.

Australia’s tour of South Africa Preview

The first game of the Australia’s tour of South Africa will begin with the two teams playing each other in a T20I. The two sides will play a couple of T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches in the matter of the tour.

This will be South Africa’s first series after the Cricket World Cup, whereas Australia have already played a couple of series, including the one against Sri Lanka. They had won both, the ODI and the Test series against Sri Lanka, but incidentally, lost the two T20Is to the Sri Lankans.

The side has a similar look to what had played in Sri Lanka, with Cameron White leading the team. White is in dire need of some runs as he looks to ensure that he can get going. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see how the likes of Patrick Cummings go.

South Africa will be led by Hashim Amla, who has had a good time with the bat recently. Dale Steyn will be missing from the attack, as will AB de Villiers.

Murray punishes Nadal in final of Japan Open

Andy Murray recovered from a one-set deficit to defeat Rafael Nadal in the final of the Japan Open. Such was Murray’s dominance in the final set of the match that he won the set without dropping a single game.

Murray won only his fourth ATP Tour title of the year, winning in three sets, 3-6 6-2 6-0.

Interestingly, Murray had gone into the match against Nadal having losing only one match of the last 23 that he had played. However, in the three matches that he had played against Nadal, he had lost two of them.

And the start to the match began in a similar fashion as he lost the first set with a break of serve.

It was in the second set that Murray bean to show signs of a comeback, before closing it at 6-2. By that time, Nadal had totally fallen behind the opponent and Murray wrapped it up in fine style, winning it six to nothing.

Rooney could miss entire first round of UEFA Euro Cup

England star player Wayne Rooney will soon come to know of the punishment that he will need to endure for being red-carded in England’s Euro Cup qualifier against Montenegro.

Rooney was red-carded and will now face anywhere between one and three games out of the tournament depending on what the UEFA thinks about the penalty.

Rooney had angrily kicked at Montenegro’s Miodrag Dzudovic, which had got him a straight red card. This will mean that given that England’s next game is going to be played straight away in 2012 at the Euro Cup, he will miss the Euro’s opening game at least. If the UEFA decided on banning him for three games, he will miss the entire first round of the competition.

Interestingly, England’s manager Fabio Capello has already said that Rooney will not play in any of the England friendlies that the side will play in their preparation for the tournament.
