Four Indians in ICC’s ODI squad

There are four Indians in the ICC’s ODI side of the year but there is no place for someone like a Sachin Tendulkar. Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Zaheer Khan make it to the 11-member squad that was chosen by a committee headed by Clive Lloyd, which also has two Sri Lankans, one Englishman, two South Africans and one each from Australia and Pakistan.

Sehwag will have Dilshan as his opening partner in the game, followed by Kumar Sangakkara and AB de Villiers in the middle-order. There will also be place for Yuvraj and Watson in the middle, while Dhoni will bat seven.

The bowling department will be taken care of by Swann, Gul, Steyn and Zaheer with Lasith Malinga as the 12th man. Dhoni will lead the side as well.

Interestingly, the team has three wicket-keepers in Sangakkara, de Villiers and Dhoni.

The side was selected by Clive Lloyd, who was the chairman, along with South Africa’s Paul Adams, England’s Mike Gatting, New Zealand’s Danny Morrison and Pakistan’s Zaheer Abbas.

Djokovic to take on Nadal in US Open 2011 final

Novak Djokovic will take on Rafael Nadal in the final of the US Open 2011 which will be played on Monday evening, a day after it is usually played. Djokovic had gone into the tournament as the number one seed while Nadal is the second ranked player.

Djokovic entered the final after winning the semi-final against the third-seeded and crowd favourite, Roger Federer in a gruelling five-set match. Federer won the first two sets and looked good to win it before Djokovic won the next two to force it into the final set.

In the final set, Federer was serving 5-3, 40-15, with two match points to his name but the top seeded player saved the two and went on to close the match down at 7-5.

Nadal, on the other hand, went on to win the semi-final against fourth-seeded Andy Murray with consummate ease, winning in four sets.

Djokovic has won two Grand Slams this year and has lost only two matches, one to Federer and another to Murray. Nadal has won the French Open this year.

Liverpool lose 0-1 to Stoke City in EPL

Stoke City beat Liverpool 1-0 in the fourth game of this season’s English Premier League at the Britannia Stadium thanks to a Jon Walters penalty in the first half. The loss meant that Liverpool were stuck with seven points from four games after having won two games in a row.

Stoke City have eight points from their four matches and are currently on the fourth spot behind Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea. Liverpool and the Wolves are tied with seven points from four games, while Newcastle United have seven points but from three games.

It was an exciting game with Liverpool dominating the possession and chance-creations throughout the game. However, Stoke City held out rather well to see through to the close of play with the 1-0 verdict for themselves.

The Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was upset with the refereeing in the game and blamed the official for the result. He said that they would have won the game had it not been for the poor umpiring in the match.

Scotland go in with new-look side for Georgia game

In a move that is bound to surprise many, the Scottish side has made 11 changes to the team that beat Romania in their opening fixture of the Rugby World Cup 2011. Scotland beat Romania in the Rugby World Cup match on Saturday but struggled to do so and will now have to ensure that they can get the better of Georgia in their next Rugby World Cup 2011 match on Wednesday.

Rory Lawson was named the captain of the side for this particular game.

Scotland were trailing Romania in that game, before finally triumphing 34-24 in the match at Rugby Park Stadium. While the changes were bound to be made, what will add to the controversy is the fact that there are 11 changes that are made, which could affect the continuity of the side in the tournament.

Max Evans, Allan Jacobsen, Sean Lamont and Kelly Brown are the only four who have been retained in the side for the Georgia game.

Scotland go into the match with four wins in a row. The coach clarified that the changes were made because the side did not have too many days between the matches.

Stosur wins US Open, Williams loses hearts

Samantha Stosur won the final of the US Open 2011 when she beat Serena Williams in an ill-tempered final. Stosur was a surprising winner of the tournament, after Williams, who is a 13-time Grand Slam champion went into the final looking like she was the favourite to win the tournament.

However, what would have surprised the fans even more is that Stosur won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, without too much going for her.

The highlight of the match, however, was another controversy that took place, as is usually the norm in Serena’s matches in the WTA.

Serving at 30-40 in the first game of the second set, Williams seemed to have hit a winner but even before the point had ended, she screamed come on. This meant that the chair umpire decided to penalise Williams for her scream, which could have disturbed the opponent.

With the point lost, Williams had also been broken and was so angry that she said to the referee that she was the same one who screwed her up in another tournament before this! As it later turned out, that was another referee who had got into trouble with Williams!

India-England involved in another tied game

India and England were involved in their second tie of the year as Duckworth-Lewis again took centrestage of the game played at Lord’s.

Chasing 281 for a win, the English side needed to score 11 runs off the last nine balls of the game, with four wickets in hand and it began to rain. They were a couple of runs ahead of the total needed to tie the game, which meant that they would have won the game had it been called off at that stage.

However, this was followed by a run-out of Graeme Swann and the wicket of Ravi Bopara off the fifth ball of the penultimate over of the match. With 11 now needed from seven balls, and two wickets down, the game was now in fine balance, which meant that if the game got called off at that stage, it would have been a tie.

That is precisely what happened and the match was called a tie.

Unfortunately for the Indians, it meant that they were left without a win yet again on tour.

The England side has now won the series and will play the last game of the five-match series at Sophia Gardens in Wales.
